Raising a Bilingual Smart Aleck

Ryan (age 3.5): "Mommy, open this! "

Me: "No Ryan"

Ryan:"Mommy open this, open, open, open, OPEN IT"

Me: "Ryan, what's the magic word?"

Ryan: "Abre!"

For those who don't speak spanish or watch Sesame Street, "Abre" is "open" in spanish. We are now working on 'por favor'.

My kids learned Spanish from Dora. This is how my 2 yr old used to count:

One, two, fee, four, uno, dos, cinco, cinco, cinco, CINCO!!

At least it's a useful word in Spanish.

I'm trying to learn a little Italian for my upcoming trip to Italy and the only thing I can really say is "il bambino sutto l'aereo."

The boy is under the airplane.

That will totally come in handy! I can see the CNN scroll now: "American Tourist saves Italian Boy Trapped Below Plane"

I had a really lame Spanish teacher, so I have lots of useful phrases like "No, no mi padre no es artisto" (no my father is not an artist).

I learned "Mañana me comportaré mejor." I had to write it many times after class.

It means "Tomorrow I will behave better."

Ahhh Dora... Hannah sings: Come on MAVANOS (instead of vamanos). So cute though.

Our hs spanish teacher used to ask us every friday to talk about our weekend plans. This one kid used to always say "Quiero bebir MUCHOS aguardients." (I want to drink a lot of alcoholic beverages).
