Who Wants to be a PWD?

Inspired by Amy's recent round-up of diabetes quizzes, I'm here with a few headscratchers of my own. You may phone a friend or ask the audience if you need help with these.
For $100 or 120 Strips:
What is the appropriate action to take when you see 320 on your blood glucose meter?
a) Administer a correction bolus based on ratios determined with the assistance of your medical team.
b) Laugh maniacally and curse the diabetes gods.
c) Find nearest brick wall and bang your head against it.
d) Order Chinese food. What the heck, you are already high.
For $500 or a visit to the endo with annual bloodwork and a TSH panel thrown in for good measure:
When you succeed in lowering a high blood sugar to a number within range, you should:
a) Pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
b) Eat something! anything! You're back in range, celebrate by pushing it back up there!
c) Test your blood sugar 4-5 times so that your meter average isn't killed by the 4-5 times you checked while you were still high.
d) Pee. Remember, your body is still processing that high from 2 hours ago.
For $3000 or my 2006 out-of-pocket maximum:
Your head is pounding from a day of swinging blood sugars. You:
a) Ship the husband and the kids off to Chuck E Cheese and the movies.
b) Scour the cabinets for something stronger than bubblegum flavored Children's Advil.
c) Curl up on the sofa and watch mindless TV.
d) All of the above.
Not to complain, but can you tell what kind of day I've had?
6 Comments:
You didn't include napping as an option. Someone told me I'm supposed to exercise away my highs but sleeping seems to work so well...
That is hilarious! Haha. For number 1, I traditionally do both a) and d). Take the insulin, but pig out anyway. For number 2, I actually hit 101 last weekend and decided to celebrate by eating ice cream. And for 3, well, I don't have a husband (or live-in boyfriend) nor do I have kids nor do I get a headache from swinging blood sugars, but given the option, I'd probably watch a movie, in my room, with lots and lots of popcorn and Diet Coke to keep me company.
Laughter is a good way out of many a bad-day situation! I could have used some more "All of the above" choices.
Thanks for posting this!
Question 1 - a, b and c. My wall has permanent head-banging marks and I have the diabetes gods on speed dial.
#2 - a and d. Followed by that speed dial call.
Since drinking a bottle of wine probably isn't the best choice for question #3, I'd go with all of the above.
Hi Kassie,
This is the first time I've commented here, but I really like your blog, and this is great post!
I think I'd probably go with c all the way through. I definitely have a real thing about the meter average getting screwed up!
Going directly for the jackpot, I'd say "all of the above." But I'd probably say that for all of 'em.
Actually "all of the ABOVE" sounds kind of like what I curse on bad D-days when I don't want my kids to learn too much new vocabulary. Know what I mean?
Excellent post!!
