Who'll be my Larry Bird?

There is a new gym opening in our area, about 3 miles away from us. It's a Richmond-based operation called "American Family Fitness", and they're putting the finishing touches on it this week. We visited yesterday, during an open house, and decided to take the plunge and sign up the whole family.

I've never belonged to a gym before. I'm a little nervous about it, seeing as it's a decent enough financial commitment.

But here's what motivated me - it's a Family Gym. Truly. Like most gyms, they offer free care for kids. But starting at the toddler age, they offer games, activities, pool time, and sports. Beginning at age 9, the kids can go to "The Zone", where they have a kid-sized circuit (and staff who teach them how to use it), a fitness wall and classes like yoga, karate, cardio box, and more. All the classes are included in the fee. Kids 9 and up are also entitled to a free meeting with a personal trainer!

Add to that the fact that several of the families we hang out with also joined, and it seems like the best possible scenario for getting me to a gym.

Now all that's left is to settle on my own personal Larry Bird. Though I stand by my prior statements that Dr. J is the best player ever, six minutes doesn't seem like much of a workout! Being a Philly girl and long time Flyers fan (and very out of shape), I'll start with a Bobby Clarke 16 for now.

I think that sounds really awesome!

What better motivation to go than to have the kids WANTING to go and nagging mom & dad to take them!

Scott is totally right about the kids wanting to go. That's awesome!

Good for you! That gym sounds great - I wish there were one like that close to me. When the baby is a little older, our local YMCA has a family zone with cardio machines and then a roomful of stuff for kids...

Kassie, it's such a small world. I went to my endo on Friday and she gave me a copy of your book :0) I mentioned that I knew about the book and that I read your blog but never got ahold of a copy. THEN she proceeds to tell me that your sister or sister-in-law is a patient of hers also! I see nurse practitioner Cecelia Passanza at Herbst, McGrath, Gkonos and she is amazing. She is so encouraging, positive, warm and really takes her time.

Kassie - EXCELLENT that your little guys want to join you at the gym.

Re: workouts, you could start with triple Dr. J's - rotate 6 minutes on the treadmill, then 6 on the elliptical, then six on the stepper. Bite size bits of fitness go a long way, and circuit training burns the most calories. Work up to three 11 minute stints - 33 LARRY BIRD!!

Ahem. I'm way too into this. :)

Good luck with the gym and let me know if you need any workouts!

I was extremely nervous and self conscious about going to the gym, but you'll soon realize that everybody else is self conscious too (even the most in shape people...they're out to impress).

That sounds like an awesome gym! I wish they had something like that here.

Just a suggestion, but my favorite player (who also has D) is Adam Morrison (#35).

Maybe that's still too long, but something to attain for.

This sounds like fun, Kassie.

Personally, I choose Billie Jean King - who was 30 when she defeated Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes."

Nice even number.

Hope all goes well!
