Turns out Zach's a girl
For Christmas, we bought the boys a small fish tank and two fish, Zach (a sunset wag platy) and Cody (a black molly). Within 24 hours, Cody was dead and I was off to Petsmart for a replacement. I must admit, I was feeling pretty smug, having convinced Jake to select an all-black (read: easy to match) fish. That Cody lasted about a week, at which point I realized that the tank was just way too small, and I set up a larger tank. This, no doubt, is how they suck you in.
After moving the fish, I started to take apart the small tank, but ended up leaving about an inch of water and the gravel in the smaller tank, to be tossed out when I could sift the rocks out. Yes, that was a week ago. It takes a while to get to things.
Zach, stressed from the move to the big tank, settled in to one corner of the tank the other day and stopped swimming. Yes, we did lie to Ryan and tell him that Zach was just very tired (until I could get to Petsmart). No lessons in life and death just yet.
Much to our surprise, tonight we discovered two barely visible teeny tiny baby fish... in the old tank. The old, unfiltered, no food, no heater, one inch of stagnant water tank. Not the clean, perfectly titrated new tank. Where, apparently, fish go to die.
So, now I have to keep FOUR fish alive. Wish me luck, those baby fish are hard to swap out.

Not that this will make you feel any better - fish are hard to keep alive (!) - but we once won gold fish at the fair that lived for FIVE YEARS. Tango and Cash. I swear.
But then my mom got all brilliant on us and washed the tank with Clorox. Yeah. You do the math.
Wow, that is actually a pretty amazing story!
Good luck with keeping the little ones alive. My longest surviving coldwater fish lived a whopping eight years, but fish are surprisingly fragile. I had other fish in the same tank that sometimes lived only a few months before upping fins!
Don't put the babies in with the big fish - if you have any left ;) - or they will be fish food in a matter of seconds. And never wash the tank with a regular sponge or soap. Dead fish will result. I learned that the hard way.
hmmm, this talk of washing the tank concerns me. ;)
I called Petsmart Saturday night just before I was about to put them in the big tank. They set me straight on that!
Thanks for the tip, though!
See, that's one of the things I love about the OC -- advice on all sort of non-diabetes related things... Good advice, even.
Good luck with the fish. I'm waiting until Jacob is at least 4 before I buy any pets. Lord knows what he'll do with them now.
I had a goldfish for 2 years. I'm convinced that it was because I fed it oatmeal.
I once kept black fish with those big eyes for 3 years. Again I fed them oatmeal.
If you ever run out of fish food, go to the oatmeal.
